Poetry for Children

When you were young did your parents read poetry to you?  Do you read poetry to your children?  Our little Singleton has me reminiscing about my own childhood and I remember my mother reading and reciting poetry to me all the time.  I even memorized some favourites and could recite them by heart.

Of course, I loved being read stories as well, but there is something special about the rhythmic verse of a poem.

This week, I've had trouble keeping down anything other than toast and jam and Corey dotes on me and makes my morning toast so that I can eat something before I even get out of bed.  I know this sounds highly indulgent, but if you have had bad morning sickness, I know you'll understand how necessary it is.  Anyway, he called up to me the other day to offer me my usual raspberry jam or "other" ... which turned out to be a jar of marmalade I had accidentally brought home from my bridal shower.  The conversation that followed involved me trying not to throw up and lots of shouting between the kitchen and the bedroom.

Finally, we discovered that "other" was marmalade and that it's usually not a good idea to surprise a queasy, picky pregnant woman with an "other" option.  Having never cared for marmalade, I shouted down the stairs (admittedly a little too harshly) "I hate marmalade.  Never offer it to me again!  Why are you torturing me when I only want my usual toast with butter and jam?"

At this point, I burst out giggling because I remembered one of my favourite childhood poems, The King's Breakfast by A.A. Milne.  There's an illustration (above) and here is the actual poem:

     The King asked
     The Queen, and
     The Queen asked
     The Dairymaid:
“Could we have some butter for
     The Royal slice of bread?”
     The Queen asked
     The Dairymaid,
     The Dairymaid
     Said, “Certainly,
     I’ll go and tell
     The cow
     Now
     Before she goes to bed.”
     The Dairymaid
     She curtsied,
     And went and told
     The Alderney:
     “Don’t forget the butter for
     The Royal slice of bread.”
     The Alderney
     Said sleepily:
     “You’d better tell
     His Majesty
     That many people nowadays
     Like marmalade
     Instead.”
     The Dairymaid
     Said, “Fancy!”
     And went to
     Her Majesty.
She curtsied to the Queen, and
     She turned a little red:
     “Excuse me,
     Your Majesty,
     For taking of
     The liberty,
     But marmalade is tasty, if
     It’s very
     Thickly
     Spread.”
     The Queen said
     “Oh!”
     And went to
     His Majesty:
     “Talking of the butter for
     The Royal slice of bread,
     Many people
     Think that
     Marmalade
     Is nicer.
Would you like to try a little
     Marmalade
     Instead?”

     The King said,
     “Bother!”
     And then he said,
     “Oh, dear me!”
The King sobbed, “Oh, deary me!”
     And went back to bed.
     “Nobody,”
     He whimpered,
     “Could call me
     A fussy man;
     I only want
     A little bit
     Of butter for
     My bread!”

     The Queen said,
     “There, there!”
     And went to
     The Dairymaid.
     The Dairymaid
     Said, “There, there!”
     And went to the shed.
     The cow said,
     “There, there!
     I didn’t really
     Mean it;
     Here’s milk for his porringer
     And butter for his bread.”
     The Queen took
     The butter
     And brought it to
     His Majesty;
     The King said,
     “Butter, eh?”
     And bounced out of bed.
     “Nobody,” he said,
     As he kissed her
     Tenderly,
     “Nobody,” he said,
     As he slid down
     The banisters,
     “Nobody,
     My darling,
     Could call me
     A fussy man—
     BUT
I DO like a little bit of butter to my bread!”

What do you think?  Cute, right?  And kind of silly.... exactly the kind of thing a child would like.

Here are my other two childhood favourites:

The Swing by Robert Louis Stevenson:

How do you like to go up in a swing,

Up in the air so blue?

Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing
Ever a child can do!

Up in the air and over the wall,
Till I can see so wide,
River and trees and cattle and all
Over the countryside--

Till I look down on the garden green,
Down on the roof so brown--
Up in the air I go flying again,
Up in the air and down!

And here's my all-time favourite!  It makes me think of our big "scary" dog, Barkley.

The Tale of Custard the Dragon by Ogden Nash:

Belinda lived in a little white house,
With a little black kitten and a little gray mouse,

And a little yellow dog and a little red wagon,

And a realio, trulio, little pet dragon.

Now the name of the little black kitten was Ink,

And the little gray mouse, she called her Blink,
And the little yellow dog was sharp as Mustard,
But the dragon was a coward, and she called him Custard.

Custard the dragon had big sharp teeth,

And spikes on top of him and scales underneath,
Mouth like a fireplace, chimney for a nose,
And realio, trulio, daggers on his toes.

Belinda was as brave as a barrel full of bears,

And Ink and Blink chased lions down the stairs,
Mustard was as brave as a tiger in a rage,
But Custard cried for a nice safe cage.

Belinda tickled him, she tickled him unmerciful,

Ink, Blink and Mustard, they rudely called him Percival,
They all sat laughing in the little red wagon
At the realio, trulio, cowardly dragon.

Belinda giggled till she shook the house,

And Blink said Week! , which is giggling for a mouse,
Ink and Mustard rudely asked his age,
When Custard cried for a nice safe cage.

Suddenly, suddenly they heard a nasty sound,

And Mustard growled, and they all looked around.
Meowch! cried Ink, and Ooh! cried Belinda,
For there was a pirate, climbing in the winda.

Pistol in his left hand, pistol in his right,

And he held in his teeth a cutlass bright,
His beard was black, one leg was wood;
It was clear that the pirate meant no good.

Belinda paled, and she cried, Help! Help!

But Mustard fled with a terrified yelp,
Ink trickled down to the bottom of the household,
And little mouse Blink strategically mouseholed.

But up jumped Custard, snorting like an engine,

Clashed his tail like irons in a dungeon,
With a clatter and a clank and a jangling squirm
He went at the pirate like a robin at a worm.

The pirate gaped at Belinda's dragon,

And gulped some grog from his pocket flagon,
He fired two bullets but they didn't hit,
And Custard gobbled him, every bit.

Belinda embraced him, Mustard licked him,

No one mourned for his pirate victim
Ink and Blink in glee did gyrate
Around the dragon that ate the pyrate.

But presently up spoke little dog Mustard,

I'd been twice as brave if I hadn't been flustered.
And up spoke Ink and up spoke Blink,
We'd have been three times as brave, we think,
And Custard said, I quite agree
That everybody is braver than me.

Belinda still lives in her little white house,

With her little black kitten and her little gray mouse,
And her little yellow dog and her little red wagon,
And her realio, trulio, little pet dragon.

Belinda is as brave as a barrel full of bears,

And Ink and Blink chase lions down the stairs,
Mustard is as brave as a tiger in a rage,
But Custard keeps crying for a nice safe cage.

Growing up, I always wanted a relio, trulio little pet dragon, but I'll settle for two dogs with bad breath.  ;)

Do you or would you read poetry to your children?  Which poems are your favourites?  I'd love to add to my own list!

Happy Monday!

How was your weekend?  Did you get one?  Ours flew by with Corey working on the bathroom and me just... working.  We did start the process of booking our honeymoon, which is really exciting!  I can't wait to share our plans with you guys.

I've been forgetting to post Friday links and I have been terrible at prepping posts.  This has been the second Sunday in a row that I found myself working with no time to blog.  I've still managed to collect some fun links to share with you guys:

The photo (above) was sent to me via Pinterest by my friend Miranda who knows how much I love succulents.  Isn't it a cute idea?

I would love to try this easy DIY.

Are you depressed about not making enough money?  Here's a fresh perspective on how much money you should actually be making.

Tomorrow is April Fools!  Do you have any pranks planned?

I want to try these 3 Ingredient Recipes.

I've posted this to Facebook before, but this guy just cracks me up!

Have you read this theory about the Missing Malaysia Airlines Jet?

This is a crazy way to think about your family.

Are you safe enough?

Do you know how dogs drink?

Is it weird that I want the sushi bazooka?

I hope you all have a great week.  Thinking of all the my teacher friends who will have to deal with classroom pranks in the morning. ;)  Don't pick up that chalk- It's actually toothpaste!!!

It's BEAN a While (Black Bean Brownie Recipe)

Only my friend, Jessica will truly appreciate the title of this post.  Hope you like it, Jess. :P

Did you guys have a good weekend?  I'll confess that after my terrarium workshop over the weekend, all I want to do after work is make whimsical terrariums.  I'm like that with knitting sometimes... or home projects... or even a really good book.  Do you ever find a hobby or project that totally consumes your free time?  I kind of love when it happens (despite the mess that usually follows) because it forces me to totally relax and re-focus outside of work.

I have the type of job where I could always be working on something.  Probably most self-employed people could say something similar.  I also really like to be busy... Like, all the time busy with a capital "B"!  Corey would love to tell you how annoying I am on vacation (Perhaps I'll get him to write a post about it sometime.) because I'll sit down on the beach with my rum punch and within twenty minutes I'm antsy to explore or snorkel or take a trip off the resort... You get the picture!  Little side projects (like blogging) really help me to focus on something besides work without feeling anxious because I'm not engaged in something.  FYI, I just re-read this and my finger is itching to open a new window in my browser so that I can look up my symptoms to see if I have some sort of disorder.  I am resisting the urge.  Thought you should know. :)

So, I mentioned that I'm in "working-to-fit-into-a-wedding-dress" mode and that Corey has been extremely supportive in my efforts to workout like some crazy exercise fiend... Okay, I probably use the term "exercise fiend" rather loosely and I really mean someone who is in terrible shape but spends one hour a day on a treadmill.  Well, a part of my plan involves eating very differently and certainly much cleaner.  Part of this means cutting out most of the flour from my diet... Which sucked at first, but I'm feeling really great at this point.  Now, I'm sharing this, not to prepare you for this to turn into some sort of food blog... Because it's not!  No, I just wanted you to have some background to explain why on earth I would ever consider making brownies with beans!

That's right.... I said BEANS!  I actually made brownies with the "musical fruit" and I sort of did it to prove a point.  You see, I have been eating clean for a couple of weeks and I was sort of craving a treat so I started looking up brownie recipes without flour.  There are tons of great recipes out there but one caught my eye because the main ingredient is actually cooked black beans.  I immediately thought  "Wow, these crazy diet people must be nuts if they can trick themselves into thinking that beans taste like fudge!" and, while that's partially true, these honestly taste like brownies to me, so I suppose I'm nuts too!  I never post recipes here, but I feel like these brownies were more of a science experiment and I'm so shocked that they turned out that I just needed to tell someone.  I really expected making them would somehow prove that I was right and the internet was wrong, but I was actually pleasantly surprised to lose this bet with myself.

Wow, that was a long lead-in to the recipe.  You're probably waiting for me to just get to it... Unless you're grossed out by my bean brownies and are vowing never to come to my house for dinner in case I've ground up brussel sprouts in the ice cream.  If that's the case, you'll probably skip the recipe, but here it is, and I'll even make it easy to find for those of you who don't have the patience to read today's ramblings!

HERE IS THE RECIPE (FINALLY!)

By the way, if you'd like to see the original, here's the link.  This makes a double batch if you use an 8x8 inch brownie pan like I do.  Maybe I'll make them extra thick next time. :)

You'll Need:
4 ounces unsweetened baker's chocolate
3/4 cup unsalted butter
1 can (approximately 550 ml) cooked black beans, rinsed and drained
1 cup chopped nuts or dried fruit (I had some figs lying around, which I threw in)
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup instant coffee
2 tablespoons cocoa
¼ teaspoon sea salt
4 eggs
1½ cups sugar or splenda (or a little more if you like things sweet) dissolved in 1 cup of water

Preheat the oven to 325°F.  Line your brownie pan with parchment paper and lightly oil with cooking spray.

Melt the chocolate and butter in your microwave for about 2 minutes.  Stir with a spoon, since the chocolate may not appear melted.

This next step can be done with a food processor, but I used an old pastry kneader and some elbow grease.  Mix together the beans, nuts or fruit, vanilla extract a few spoonfuls of the melted chocolate and butter.  Blend until smooth... It's important to get rid of the beanie texture!

In a large bowl, mix the remaining melted chocolate and butter with the coffee and salt.  Add it to the bean mixture and stir until blended.

In another bowl (you'll have plenty of dishes to do after making these!) Beat your eggs WELL.  I didn't have an electric mixer unpacked so I improvised with a milk frother.  They're the same, right?  Add your sugar/splenda and water and beat well.

Add the egg mixture to the bean mixture, leaving about 1/2 cup aside to create a marbled effect later.  Mix well and pour batter into the pan.  (You may need more than one pan, if it's small.)

Beat remaining egg mixture until light and fluffy and drizzle over the brownie batter.  Use a toothpick to pull the egg through the batter.

Bake for 40 Minutes.  Allow to cool completely (refrigeration is best) before cutting.  Store in refrigerator.

If you make them, let me know what you think!  I'm curious to know if I'm the only person who is shocked by how much they like these.

Where have these BEAN all my life?

Friday Reading: Part 16

Don't worry, I did't mix up the date.  I'm going to swap Friday's post for the one I had scheduled for tonight, since this answers a question that many of you have about the new Facebook anniversary videos.

Have you seen these new super-sappy Facebook videos?  They're basically the smartest commercials for FB that I've ever seen and I can't tell whether the photos and posts are chosen by people or whether the folks at FB just used a very smart algorithm.  I hate to admit it, but I totally love them and have found myself watching the videos posted by all my friends!  What do you think?  Are they amazing or a little creepy?  Here's mine:

And here's Corey's video:

And here's a great link if you're interested in downloading yours to keep.  Just play the video in Facebook and then click "options" then "get link" to copy the link.  Paste the url into the field in the website I mentioned and click the download button.  Save it as an MP4.  Easy, right?  Just don't tell Zuckerberg I showed you how. ;)

Have you seen these stunning photographs?

An interesting look at Wall Street.

Surprising but smart!

I'm not sure if this has been fact checked, but it certainly offers a new perspective on global financial problems.

Gorgeous white ink tattoos.

Do you find it more challenging to make friends as an adult?  You're not alone.

Made me cry.

Take a minute to read about an amazing teacher.

My wedding shoes.

Have a wonderful weekend!  I hope you're doing something fun/exciting/productive/relaxing!  Do tell!

Snowy Walk

How was your weekend?  Ours was pretty great!  When I wasn't working, Corey and I were enjoying some "date time" together and we tried to get outside in the snow as much as possible.

On Saturday morning, we bundled up and took Barkley for a walk along the belt-line trail.

I'm not going to lie- The Bark sort of hated it and endured it with a facial expression that made him look like a martyr.

Still, the trail was pretty in a sparse wintery way and Corey and I enjoyed a little hike.

The dull grey scenery made the graffiti on some of the nearby buildings look extra vibrant!

I'm afraid Barkley didn't appreciate the sights quite as much as we did.  This is his "Take me home!  TAKE ME HOOMMMMEEE!!!" face.

After the walk, Barkley warmed up with a (naturally shed) caribou antler and lots of cuddles!  Who else has a pet who's reluctant to go outside in the winter?

Did you have a good weekend?  Did you do anything outside?  Where is your favourite place to walk?

Happy Monday!
