Friday Links: Part 17

This has been a monster of a week for me.  It was a busy work week, I was fighting a bad cold and we are still living without our upstairs bathroom.  During my evening off, Corey surprised me (sorry for the blurry photo) by telling me that our plumbing hardware had arrived!  We are plugging away (see what I did there?) at this room and I'm hoping to have some progress to share with you next week!  Omg, I just realized that it has only been one week since we lost our bathroom.  It feels like ages!  Oh, the humanity!  How will we last???

For now, I'm still resting and recovering, but here are some fun links for you guys.  Have a marvellous weekend!

Sometimes immature humour makes me chuckle!

You can tell this post was originally intended for last week, because I included some fun Academy Award gossip.

"I went to the Oscars with my best friend..."

What's your Travolta Name?

I love these creative Lego photos.

How to choose the right seat at any table.

These are a great idea!

Are you keeping your child from becoming a leader?

Totally want to try this!  Wouldn't it make a cozy blanket?

The other night, Corey started giggling so hard that he actually woke me up.  He was watching this video.

Here's a video that had me in stitches!

Do you like these cool origami doors?

Unfortunately, it may NOT be too late for this outdoor project.

I like this list of great DIY activities for kids.

Very touching!

Do you have a common birthday?

A little dose of daily dishonesty.

Very true.

Is this cool or kind of icky?

This is a sweet idea.

Have you heard the speech Ellen Page gave at the THRIVE conference?  The standing ovation she received when she announced that she was gay was so beautiful that it made me cry.  LOVE this girl!

Ten Things I Like About Myself

So, this blog world has crept up on me sort of slowly and insidiously and I'm at the point where I can actually say that I'm officially a recreational blogger.  Will it ever take over my life?  No, I love my job!  But... I do sometimes find that there's a whole little blog world that I'm now a part of and my non-bloggy friends don't quite understand.

For instance, the blogosphere is powerful and I find that often a great idea is echoed in many different blogs because many of us follow one another or keep in touch in some way.  Today's post is self-indulgent in the way having that brownie or extra glass of wine is indulgent... but isn't that just what we need sometimes when the weather has been cold for soooooo long?

It's also surprisingly difficult to do, but I'm going to follow the example of another brave blogger and tell you all ten things I like about myself.  Keep in mind that this is hard because we're all taught to be humble.  Yes, we live in a society that applauds humility, but rewards confidence.  So why don't we challenge ourselves to be both?

I'm ashamed to say that I could probably more easily compile a list of things I need to improve, but isn't that a little sad?  I think this will be a great exercise and I challenge you to come up with your own list and share it.. or not.  Either way, I think it will be highly liberating.

And because I initially felt nervous to choose ten things I like about myself, I'm going to go a step further and choose fifteen!

1.  I'm smart.  I wish there were a way to say it without being braggy, but I don't care because I am really freakin' smart and it's one of my best qualities.  It helped me in school and it helps me at work.  I even think it directs me socially because I seek out people who challenge me.

2.  I am creative.  I have always had a knack for creative endeavours and I like to make things myself.

3.  I have a great sense of humour.  I've always been a little bit of a clown.  I loved making my friends laugh in school.  As an adult, this translates to a sarcastic, silly, uncensored sense of humour and I really like it.

4.  I'm really good at camping and being in the outdoors.  I'm surprisingly resourceful and I do well in quasi-survival situations.  I think I could survive a zombie outbreak.

5.  I choose friends (and significant others) well.  This may not feel like a skill, but I'm exceptionally proud of the friends I keep.

6.  I care.  I care about people, animals, causes... you name it.  I am really committed to leaving the world a better place than when I found it and I genuinely want the people around me to feel loved and special.

7.  I am persuasive.  I am really good at getting people to see my side of things and this helps me at work... and a lot with Corey. ;)

8.  I am a natural leader and I manage to take charge even when I'm feeling shy.

9.  I don't have any grey hair... Isn't that amazing???

10.  I am a natural motivator and giver of great advice.  Ask my family and close friends!

11.  I am an achiever.  This list is a perfect example... I felt like I couldn't do it, so I pushed myself to do 50% more.

12.  I have never read 50 Shades of Grey... I am inexplicably proud of this fact.

13.  I cook.  Maybe too well at times, but Corey and I think I'm a fabulous cook... with the one exception being an almond and mustered encrusted chicken dish, which we never speak of.

14.  I am brave enough to speak in public even when I'm nervous... and to have taken an unedited selfie for this post after working a 15 hour day!

15.  I am fun!  I love games and laughs and all sorts of antics.  I feel like Corey and I will have a fun life!

And here's the part where I challenge you to think of ten things that you really like about yourself.  Do it!  It's empowering.  If you're feeling brave, list your ten things in the comments below.  And, if you need inspiration, check out what some others have said. :)

Blog Spring Cleaning

I was recently looking for an old post from last year and I felt myself getting frustrated pretty quickly.  It made me realize that if even I can't find old posts, it's probably nearly impossible for you!  In an effort to make this a little easier in the future, I have reorganized the headings to include photos and links to specific posts under each topic.  This way, you can quickly find and select a specific post you may be searching for.  Not all posts fall under one of these specific categories, but most do.

I'm hoping this makes it easier for you to browse and enjoy our old posts and projects.  We would love to hear what you think of the new organization!  Good?  Bad?  Not seeing what you're looking for?  You just don't care?  Don't be shy!

It's BEAN a While (Black Bean Brownie Recipe)

Only my friend, Jessica will truly appreciate the title of this post.  Hope you like it, Jess. :P

Did you guys have a good weekend?  I'll confess that after my terrarium workshop over the weekend, all I want to do after work is make whimsical terrariums.  I'm like that with knitting sometimes... or home projects... or even a really good book.  Do you ever find a hobby or project that totally consumes your free time?  I kind of love when it happens (despite the mess that usually follows) because it forces me to totally relax and re-focus outside of work.

I have the type of job where I could always be working on something.  Probably most self-employed people could say something similar.  I also really like to be busy... Like, all the time busy with a capital "B"!  Corey would love to tell you how annoying I am on vacation (Perhaps I'll get him to write a post about it sometime.) because I'll sit down on the beach with my rum punch and within twenty minutes I'm antsy to explore or snorkel or take a trip off the resort... You get the picture!  Little side projects (like blogging) really help me to focus on something besides work without feeling anxious because I'm not engaged in something.  FYI, I just re-read this and my finger is itching to open a new window in my browser so that I can look up my symptoms to see if I have some sort of disorder.  I am resisting the urge.  Thought you should know. :)

So, I mentioned that I'm in "working-to-fit-into-a-wedding-dress" mode and that Corey has been extremely supportive in my efforts to workout like some crazy exercise fiend... Okay, I probably use the term "exercise fiend" rather loosely and I really mean someone who is in terrible shape but spends one hour a day on a treadmill.  Well, a part of my plan involves eating very differently and certainly much cleaner.  Part of this means cutting out most of the flour from my diet... Which sucked at first, but I'm feeling really great at this point.  Now, I'm sharing this, not to prepare you for this to turn into some sort of food blog... Because it's not!  No, I just wanted you to have some background to explain why on earth I would ever consider making brownies with beans!

That's right.... I said BEANS!  I actually made brownies with the "musical fruit" and I sort of did it to prove a point.  You see, I have been eating clean for a couple of weeks and I was sort of craving a treat so I started looking up brownie recipes without flour.  There are tons of great recipes out there but one caught my eye because the main ingredient is actually cooked black beans.  I immediately thought  "Wow, these crazy diet people must be nuts if they can trick themselves into thinking that beans taste like fudge!" and, while that's partially true, these honestly taste like brownies to me, so I suppose I'm nuts too!  I never post recipes here, but I feel like these brownies were more of a science experiment and I'm so shocked that they turned out that I just needed to tell someone.  I really expected making them would somehow prove that I was right and the internet was wrong, but I was actually pleasantly surprised to lose this bet with myself.

Wow, that was a long lead-in to the recipe.  You're probably waiting for me to just get to it... Unless you're grossed out by my bean brownies and are vowing never to come to my house for dinner in case I've ground up brussel sprouts in the ice cream.  If that's the case, you'll probably skip the recipe, but here it is, and I'll even make it easy to find for those of you who don't have the patience to read today's ramblings!

HERE IS THE RECIPE (FINALLY!)

By the way, if you'd like to see the original, here's the link.  This makes a double batch if you use an 8x8 inch brownie pan like I do.  Maybe I'll make them extra thick next time. :)

You'll Need:
4 ounces unsweetened baker's chocolate
3/4 cup unsalted butter
1 can (approximately 550 ml) cooked black beans, rinsed and drained
1 cup chopped nuts or dried fruit (I had some figs lying around, which I threw in)
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup instant coffee
2 tablespoons cocoa
¼ teaspoon sea salt
4 eggs
1½ cups sugar or splenda (or a little more if you like things sweet) dissolved in 1 cup of water

Preheat the oven to 325°F.  Line your brownie pan with parchment paper and lightly oil with cooking spray.

Melt the chocolate and butter in your microwave for about 2 minutes.  Stir with a spoon, since the chocolate may not appear melted.

This next step can be done with a food processor, but I used an old pastry kneader and some elbow grease.  Mix together the beans, nuts or fruit, vanilla extract a few spoonfuls of the melted chocolate and butter.  Blend until smooth... It's important to get rid of the beanie texture!

In a large bowl, mix the remaining melted chocolate and butter with the coffee and salt.  Add it to the bean mixture and stir until blended.

In another bowl (you'll have plenty of dishes to do after making these!) Beat your eggs WELL.  I didn't have an electric mixer unpacked so I improvised with a milk frother.  They're the same, right?  Add your sugar/splenda and water and beat well.

Add the egg mixture to the bean mixture, leaving about 1/2 cup aside to create a marbled effect later.  Mix well and pour batter into the pan.  (You may need more than one pan, if it's small.)

Beat remaining egg mixture until light and fluffy and drizzle over the brownie batter.  Use a toothpick to pull the egg through the batter.

Bake for 40 Minutes.  Allow to cool completely (refrigeration is best) before cutting.  Store in refrigerator.

If you make them, let me know what you think!  I'm curious to know if I'm the only person who is shocked by how much they like these.

Where have these BEAN all my life?

On Marriage

My grandparents had one of the happiest relationships I had ever seen.  I'm sure it wasn't always perfect, but it worked and they worked to make it work, and the result was that they were still in love, right until the end.  I remember my grandmother lying in a hospital bed near the end, and my grandfather would come to visit, (the staff there nicknamed them "The Prince" and "The Princess" because of how devoted he was.) and they would just hold hands and smile at each other.  It almost made us feel like we were intruding, because they were truly sweethearts.

And, when I think of it now, we were intruding.  Oh, I'm sure they didn't mind, but what we saw as a sweet gesture probably symbolized more than we even understood.  I don't think many of us can comprehend the love and depth that come from a lifetime with a partner.  Imagine the understanding you would have after weathering so much together.  When I think of their generation (many of whom married so young) and all the events they saw together (wars, recessions, technology, social change), I find it difficult to comprehend the closeness that would come after raising a family with someone; watching children grow and eventually leave the house and learning to be "just two" again; and then one day welcoming grandchildren and enjoying a whole other generation of offspring.  What about the fact that often the role for one (or both) at some point, becomes that of caretaker as physical (and sometimes mental) health fails.  Does your love change when your partner is no longer a partner?  What's it like to look into your sweetheart's face and see an older person with failing health?  Perhaps it just shifts and the future that a young couple sees, eventually evolves into memories.

Like all couples embarking on life's journey together, we hope to weather the storms and grow old together and many people have wonderful advice to guide us.  This article offers some of the best marriage advice I have ever heard.  I especially like the part about bragging about your spouse and letting them hear you do it.

What's the best advice you've heard or received for a long and happy marriage?

A Romantic Unromantic Gift from my Valentine

You're probably thinking Valentine's Day is over, Taylor!  Enough with the gushy love posts!  Well, you're probably right, so I'm going to keep this one as un-gushy as possible.  I'm also going to include more photos of our disaster family room, so go ahead and think about the worst room/broom closet/sinkhole/dungeon in your own home... and then go ahead and feel smug because it still looks better than our family room! ;)

For Valentine's Day (Actually, it was a "just because" gift which happened to coincide with Valentine's Day) Corey bought me the most romantic unromantic gift ever!  That's right, we are now squeezing a treadmill into our already cramped, unrenovated, disaster of a family room/ makeshift-shower room!

I think he decided enough was enough one evening last week when another long day at work meant skipping my Zumba class... Again.  I was practically in tears when I confessed to Corey that I was so worried about my crazy schedule not allowing me time to exercise.  This revelation was especially emotional with a wedding planned for this summer.

The past few years (which included two moves, ongoing renovations, job changes for both of us, the stress of a condo nightmare and a sluggish thyroid gland) had left me with a Tinkerbell moment.

Oops!  How did that happen?  Yikes!

Oh well, there's no point in lamenting how I arrived here, but I definitely have some work to do if I expect to squeeze into a wedding dress this August.  I've never been overly athletic (My hand-eye coordination is poor... at best.) but I've been wanting a treadmill since we lived in the condo.  I enjoy walking outside and Corey and I are really active in the summer, but slippery sidewalks are not kind to a clumsy gal like me... As I discovered when I slipped on the ice last year and fractured my arm.

Anyway, I was touched by Corey's thoughtfulness and willingness to splurge on something just for me when we are saving for a gazillion things between the wedding and the home renos.  I know that a treadmill may not seem like the most romantic gift, but to me it really was!

And I have started by devoting an hour to it each day.  Call it a standing date!  ... Despite the fact that sometimes I feel like this kid from The Simpsons:

And no matter how late I finish work, Corey (and Barkley) will join me in the family room and play a tv show to motivate and distract me.  I don't love many tv shows, but I've been alternating between old seasons of The Biggest Loser (I imagine the trainers are yelling at me to really fire me up.) and episodes of Say Yes to the Dress.... The motivation there should be obvious.

And now our unrenovated family room, with the awkward shower, which I was whining about the other day...

... has actually become weirdly functional:

And I get to workout while my two boys lounge on the couch.  Corey lends encouragement and support, while Barkley grumbles if my huffing and puffing disturbs his sleep.  Still, it's the most romantic Valentine's gift ever!

Have you ever received an unexpectedly romantic and thoughtful gift?  What was it?

We Were Nominated for a Homie!

As you may already know, Fresh Coat of Paint began as a real estate blog, but for the past year, it has evolved into a great hobby and a fun way to keep track of our lives and reno progress and to keep our family and friends in-the-loop.  I think the turning point was when I realized that the only people who want to read about the real estate market day after day are other real estate agents (duh!) and so I decided to just write about my other interests.  As the months passed, I think I became less formal in my writing and now I approach each post as if I were emailing one of my bff's, which makes writing faster and much more relaxing!

While, in the grand scheme of blogging, Fresh Coat of Paint is still a very small blog, my readership has grown over the past year and now I'm averaging over 1,000 pageviews a day... Which is a far cry from when i began and I averaged about 10... which were probably all me and my family!

I have grown to love blogging, although I still sometimes feel surprised (and honoured) that anyone would actually want to read about our average little lives in the new/old house!  I still get excited when someone comments on a post or likes it on Facebook and I honestly get a little shy when someone I know tells me they read my blog all the time!  I think the most surreal moment (until now) for me was when I received a really sweet email from a reader telling me how much she enjoyed reading Fresh Coat of Paint and asking me how Barkley liked the new/old house!  I couldn't get over how awesome it was that someone out there would care enough to ask how Barkley was adjusting!  Awesome, right??

Then, yesterday, I noticed a spike in activity coming from one of my favourite blogs, Apartment Therapy.  It turns out, that one of you was kind enough to nominate me for a "Homie Award" in the "Home Design and Inspiration" category!  Obviously, I don't expect to win against many bigger (and better) blogs but I was thrilled to be included in the list and I had a bit of a Sally Field moment as I called Corey to tell him!

To all my readers, please check out the contest and consider adding a vote/nomination for me here.

And in the interest of sharing the love, please check out some of the other amazing blogs on the list.  Here are a few that I've been browsing today.  The first three are old favourites, but I discovered the rest through The Homies this year.  What are your favourite blogs?
