Cheetah Update

You guys have been so awesome and supportive about our newest family member and many of you have been asking how he's settling in.  It seems he and Barkley have established pack positions and we've all settled into a routine so we're starting to see more of his personality... and he couldn't be more different from Barkley.

First of all, we call him the raccoon.  We're still working on "No!" and "Leave it!" but for the moment, no food is safe.  You know what else isn't safe?  Books, cardboard, plastic, used kleenexes from the garbage and headphones.  We are learning quickly why other people dog-proof their houses!

For all his mischief, he is insanely lovable and aggressively affectionate.  He will stop at nothing to give you kisses and will insist on cuddling up... even on the hottest days!  He also lets Corey pick him up while he's sleeping and move him... Barkley would never put up with that!

He spends most of his time sleeping on his back and often lets his tongue poke or hang out of the side of his mouth.  He hates sleeping closest to the door and will often trip over Barkley in the middle of the night (the growls wake us up) to wedge himself between Barkley and the wall.

On walks, he is friendly to everyone (people, dogs, cats) and he forces Barkley (who gets jealous when his brother gets all the attention) to be a little friendlier and less shy with strangers too.

Feeding time is hilarious and we have to watch them closely because Barkley will steal Cheetah's meat and Cheetah will steal Barkley's veggies.  Neither of them seem to mind... but we want to ensure they both get enough of both so we watch them.  After their meal, they both switch places to lick the other's dish.  It's like they have a mutual agreement.

Their pack position is especially evident when we get home at the end of the day.  Barkley greets us first and only when he's finished does Cheetah come forward.  Barkley seems to enforce it, although Cheetah doesn't seem to mind a bit.  I can just imagine bratty Barkley saying "You can greet them second because they were my people first.  I heard them say you were an accident!"

Overall, they get along really well and seem to be best buddies.  I do notice a lot of male energy in the house though.  I keep joking to Corey that if this baby's a boy, we're going to need to get a really bitchy female cat just to even things out.  :)

Our Family is Growing By Two Feet... AND Four Paws! (Meet Cheetah)

So, if it wasn't exciting enough for our family to be growing by two feet, we thought we'd add another four paws.  Yeah, we're crazy like that!  And we are completely aware of how crazy the timing seems... because most people who are renovating an old house while planning a wedding and prepping for a baby would probably not choose to adopt a 75 pound dog.... But we never claimed to be most people!

Here's how this actually came to pass:  We've actually always sort of assumed we'd be a two dog family.  You know how you have vague pictures of your family in your mind?  Well for us, there were two kids and two dogs.  Greyhounds are low-energy and they enjoy the company of other greyhounds, so it seemed natural.

That is, until we began fostering other greyhounds and we discovered that Barkley is a bully who basically makes life miserable for other greyhounds who have tried to live with us.  Seriously, if one of them cries, he will run over to bark at them until they're quiet and heaven help them if they accidentally bump into him in our narrow hallways.  Barkley essentially steals their lunch money and gives them wedgies... or whatever the dog equivalent of that is.

We ran through fosters Louciano, Friendly and Monty this year and while Barkley and Friendly seemed to get along fairly well, we never got that feeling... you know, that feeling that something feels right.

I actually started to feel a little sad about how we'd probably never get another dog once the baby arrived and I'd been worried about Barkley feeling neglected or lonely once we're preoccupied with little Singleton.  Enter Cheetah.

Cheetah was supposed to be just another foster but he and I bonded right away.  He is the opposite of Barkley in many ways (very athletic and VERY affectionate) and yet Barkley didn't seem to hate him.  Of course, there were some growls at the start, but Cheetah was so affectionate and persistent that eventually Barkley sort of gave up and accepted him.  He even let him cuddle up at night!

By the end of our two weeks of fostering Cheetah, Corey and I were desperately trying to distance ourselves from him.  I think we both knew he was a good fit for us but neither of us really wanted to say it.  This pretty boy who roots through garbage like a raccoon, has a tongue that's so long that it comically pokes out of his mouth at times, howls like a Husky, climbs over tables to get to you and gives the fiercest cuddles, had weaseled his way into our hearts (and Barkley's) and we knew giving him up would be tough.  When I filled out my foster report, I outlined just how amazing he was but recommended that he go to a family with another dog (since he's such a social boy) or who lived in a house in case he howled during the day.

The e-mail I got back from our director of adoptions urged me to break him of the howling habit since all the applicants lived in condos.  Little did I know at the time, that was code for, Are you sure you don't want to keep him?

Corey took the news as fate and called the director back to ask about the possibility of us adopting him.  He didn't want to discuss it with me unless he knew it would be possible.  Her reply was that if it were best for the dog, it was never off the table.

And so we began a series of difficult conversations.  Were we insane?  Would we have time for another dog?  How much would he cost?  What would people think?  In the end, we knew we had already decided to keep him.  He belonged with our family and we decided that when life throws us another family member (even four-legged) we shouldn't turn it away.

I expected to feel regret after making it official and I waited for the sinking feeling to come... but all I felt was relief!  Relief that Barkley had finally found a brother and relief that we hadn't let him go to another family.  Already, I feel even more safe and secure in a house with two big dogs.  I now have a cuddly dog who has already snuggled me during some of my worst blue days as I've faced pregnancy depression.

We also got in touch with his kennel mom and learned that she had a little girl who would crawl into Cheetah's crate as a toddler.  Even on walks, we can tell he loves children so now Barkley will also have someone to teach him how to behave around the weird bald puppy with a funny bark who's coming this December.  We couldn't be happier with this turn of events!

Here are some shots of Cheetah in our (unapologetically) overgrown backyard.

And here he is sitting, which is very unusual for a greyhound due to their muscular anatomy.  See how surprised Corey is!

Mostly, he likes to curl up on the bed or couch with as many pillows as possible.  I woke up today to dog breath in my face because he is happiest when he's sleeping very close to me.

I learned that his (human) kennel mom is currently pregnant and we wonder if that's why he bonded with me right away.  It's like he smelled me and said, Oh, I know what to do with you!  You'll need lots of love, so I'll cuddle you all the time!

He's definitely my boy!

Links I Love

Happy Passover and Easter for those who celebrate!  I recall last year at this time we were in the condo preparing for our move and we decided to make a silly ridiculous Easter Egg Hunt for Barkley.

Now that we're having more nice days than cold, we've been enjoying long walks (dragging our lazy dog behind us) along the neighbourhood trails.  Everyone seems to be out and about lately and life seems happy as warm weather approaches.

By the way, here's what Barkley would like to be doing instead of joining us for walks:

These past couple of weeks have flown by in a frenzy of work, renos and wedding preparations.  I will have updates on our washroom progress soon and I'm hoping to have lots of wedding news to share in the coming months.

We've been in our new/old house for nearly a year and yet we're pretty sure the next year will be even more productive and eventful!  So I'm sorry for neglecting this blog but I can promise some exciting posts and updates to our new/old house in the months to come.  Our heads are just buzzing with ideas for this summer!

What are you doing over the long weekend?  Don't long weekends make you feel spectacular and relaxed?  I tend to have trouble relaxing but I have been feeling indulgent this weekend and even rented a couple of horror movies to watch without any guilt that I should be working.  ;)

Again, these weeks have slipped away from me and I just had to publish some of the links I've been hoarding for you guys!  More to follow... promise!

This sad story serves as a good reminder that we don't really know what's happening in the lives of others.  I think this also applies to idealized versions of lives that we see on Facebook.

How many of these do you already do?

Should we all start celebrating some of these unconventional occasions?  I think some of these are more important than birthdays and anniversaries.

Snowy Walk

How was your weekend?  Ours was pretty great!  When I wasn't working, Corey and I were enjoying some "date time" together and we tried to get outside in the snow as much as possible.

On Saturday morning, we bundled up and took Barkley for a walk along the belt-line trail.

I'm not going to lie- The Bark sort of hated it and endured it with a facial expression that made him look like a martyr.

Still, the trail was pretty in a sparse wintery way and Corey and I enjoyed a little hike.

The dull grey scenery made the graffiti on some of the nearby buildings look extra vibrant!

I'm afraid Barkley didn't appreciate the sights quite as much as we did.  This is his "Take me home!  TAKE ME HOOMMMMEEE!!!" face.

After the walk, Barkley warmed up with a (naturally shed) caribou antler and lots of cuddles!  Who else has a pet who's reluctant to go outside in the winter?

Did you have a good weekend?  Did you do anything outside?  Where is your favourite place to walk?

Happy Monday!

WHO Let the Dogs Out?

Meet Monty!  He's our newest foster greyhound and we picked him up on the weekend!  We'd love to take a minute to introduce him to you guys...  He's a real charmer, as you can probably tell from those eyes!

Unlike our last two fosters, Monty is very young and has tons of rambunctious energy.  He's also a total sweetie!

Corey tried to teach Monty to fetch, but like most greyhounds, he lost interest in the ball when it stopped moving.

He's a good sport... and he deals well with his grumpy foster brother, Barkley.

He's actually part of a group of greyhounds who were brought in from a foster home in the states.  There, he was living with one of his litter mates and their mother.  He's been really sucky towards me but we think he just misses his family.

It's been chilly in the mornings, so Barkley shared one of his coats with Monty.  If Barkley could speak he would probably say that he looks better in blue anyway. ;)

But that's not to say that Monty isn't cute... because he's so handsome!  He's mostly a light fawn colour except for a 5 o'clock shadow on his muzzle and a black tail.

Each time we get a new foster, we need to be careful to still give Barkley plenty of love.

He's an expert at photobombing.  Boom!

Boom, again!

At one point, Barkley basically made it known that Monty was not welcome to chill in our room with him.  Luckily, Monty is pretty resourceful and made his way to our spare/storage room and dug himself a spot under the blankets.    It was so cute that we almost wished we didn't have to make him get down.

What do you think of this cutie?  We have a full house again and we're seeing more of his personality each day.  It won't be long before the FULL MONTY comes out.  Sorry for the bad joke, I have absolutely no filter for bad jokes.
