Our Family is Growing By Two Feet... AND Four Paws! (Meet Cheetah)

So, if it wasn't exciting enough for our family to be growing by two feet, we thought we'd add another four paws.  Yeah, we're crazy like that!  And we are completely aware of how crazy the timing seems... because most people who are renovating an old house while planning a wedding and prepping for a baby would probably not choose to adopt a 75 pound dog.... But we never claimed to be most people!

Here's how this actually came to pass:  We've actually always sort of assumed we'd be a two dog family.  You know how you have vague pictures of your family in your mind?  Well for us, there were two kids and two dogs.  Greyhounds are low-energy and they enjoy the company of other greyhounds, so it seemed natural.

That is, until we began fostering other greyhounds and we discovered that Barkley is a bully who basically makes life miserable for other greyhounds who have tried to live with us.  Seriously, if one of them cries, he will run over to bark at them until they're quiet and heaven help them if they accidentally bump into him in our narrow hallways.  Barkley essentially steals their lunch money and gives them wedgies... or whatever the dog equivalent of that is.

We ran through fosters Louciano, Friendly and Monty this year and while Barkley and Friendly seemed to get along fairly well, we never got that feeling... you know, that feeling that something feels right.

I actually started to feel a little sad about how we'd probably never get another dog once the baby arrived and I'd been worried about Barkley feeling neglected or lonely once we're preoccupied with little Singleton.  Enter Cheetah.

Cheetah was supposed to be just another foster but he and I bonded right away.  He is the opposite of Barkley in many ways (very athletic and VERY affectionate) and yet Barkley didn't seem to hate him.  Of course, there were some growls at the start, but Cheetah was so affectionate and persistent that eventually Barkley sort of gave up and accepted him.  He even let him cuddle up at night!

By the end of our two weeks of fostering Cheetah, Corey and I were desperately trying to distance ourselves from him.  I think we both knew he was a good fit for us but neither of us really wanted to say it.  This pretty boy who roots through garbage like a raccoon, has a tongue that's so long that it comically pokes out of his mouth at times, howls like a Husky, climbs over tables to get to you and gives the fiercest cuddles, had weaseled his way into our hearts (and Barkley's) and we knew giving him up would be tough.  When I filled out my foster report, I outlined just how amazing he was but recommended that he go to a family with another dog (since he's such a social boy) or who lived in a house in case he howled during the day.

The e-mail I got back from our director of adoptions urged me to break him of the howling habit since all the applicants lived in condos.  Little did I know at the time, that was code for, Are you sure you don't want to keep him?

Corey took the news as fate and called the director back to ask about the possibility of us adopting him.  He didn't want to discuss it with me unless he knew it would be possible.  Her reply was that if it were best for the dog, it was never off the table.

And so we began a series of difficult conversations.  Were we insane?  Would we have time for another dog?  How much would he cost?  What would people think?  In the end, we knew we had already decided to keep him.  He belonged with our family and we decided that when life throws us another family member (even four-legged) we shouldn't turn it away.

I expected to feel regret after making it official and I waited for the sinking feeling to come... but all I felt was relief!  Relief that Barkley had finally found a brother and relief that we hadn't let him go to another family.  Already, I feel even more safe and secure in a house with two big dogs.  I now have a cuddly dog who has already snuggled me during some of my worst blue days as I've faced pregnancy depression.

We also got in touch with his kennel mom and learned that she had a little girl who would crawl into Cheetah's crate as a toddler.  Even on walks, we can tell he loves children so now Barkley will also have someone to teach him how to behave around the weird bald puppy with a funny bark who's coming this December.  We couldn't be happier with this turn of events!

Here are some shots of Cheetah in our (unapologetically) overgrown backyard.

And here he is sitting, which is very unusual for a greyhound due to their muscular anatomy.  See how surprised Corey is!

Mostly, he likes to curl up on the bed or couch with as many pillows as possible.  I woke up today to dog breath in my face because he is happiest when he's sleeping very close to me.

I learned that his (human) kennel mom is currently pregnant and we wonder if that's why he bonded with me right away.  It's like he smelled me and said, Oh, I know what to do with you!  You'll need lots of love, so I'll cuddle you all the time!

He's definitely my boy!

WHO Let the Dogs Out?

Meet Monty!  He's our newest foster greyhound and we picked him up on the weekend!  We'd love to take a minute to introduce him to you guys...  He's a real charmer, as you can probably tell from those eyes!

Unlike our last two fosters, Monty is very young and has tons of rambunctious energy.  He's also a total sweetie!

Corey tried to teach Monty to fetch, but like most greyhounds, he lost interest in the ball when it stopped moving.

He's a good sport... and he deals well with his grumpy foster brother, Barkley.

He's actually part of a group of greyhounds who were brought in from a foster home in the states.  There, he was living with one of his litter mates and their mother.  He's been really sucky towards me but we think he just misses his family.

It's been chilly in the mornings, so Barkley shared one of his coats with Monty.  If Barkley could speak he would probably say that he looks better in blue anyway. ;)

But that's not to say that Monty isn't cute... because he's so handsome!  He's mostly a light fawn colour except for a 5 o'clock shadow on his muzzle and a black tail.

Each time we get a new foster, we need to be careful to still give Barkley plenty of love.

He's an expert at photobombing.  Boom!

Boom, again!

At one point, Barkley basically made it known that Monty was not welcome to chill in our room with him.  Luckily, Monty is pretty resourceful and made his way to our spare/storage room and dug himself a spot under the blankets.    It was so cute that we almost wished we didn't have to make him get down.

What do you think of this cutie?  We have a full house again and we're seeing more of his personality each day.  It won't be long before the FULL MONTY comes out.  Sorry for the bad joke, I have absolutely no filter for bad jokes.

Meet Friendly (Our New Foster Dog)

I think the title of this post should actually be "Double Trouble" because a second greyhound certainly means twice the mischief.  You know when you visit your friends who have children and they're totally apologetic about the toys littered around the place but you automatically overlook it because... THEY HAVE KIDS and kids turn your world upside down and you're really just impressed that they remember to wear pants?  Well, I'm kind of hoping that's how you'll feel when you look at the top picture with all the dog toys scattered about....

The caption for the top photo should be: "Oh... Hey Mom... We didn't mess up your living room and eat your plant.  Promise!  Can we have some treats now?"

As you may have guessed, we are fostering another ex-racing greyhound!  This time, his name is Friendly and he actually looks quite a bit like Barkley.  Unlike our last foster Louciano, Friendly's temperament is more similar to Barkley's, in that he's content to sleep and cuddle most of the time.

We only have friendly for another week, so I wanted to share some cute pictures of him before he goes to his "forever home".  Here's a picture of him taking a nap with me.

Note- We're not supposed to let the foster dogs on our furniture.  But, the living room couch is irresistible, since it overlooks the front window so instead of telling them "No" constantly, we allow them on that couch only.

Look at those crazy big ears!  Friendly kind of reminds me of a cartoon wolf!

He often sleeps like this and then falls off bum first when he is disturbed.

The boys get along surprisingly well!

In this picture, Friendly actually has his paws wrapped around Barkley's foot!

I know you're wondering whether we get these two mixed up.  The short answer is no... They look quite different to us.  However, I double check which dog I have before giving meds or anything like that.

Imagine these two greeting you with kisses every morning!

And we're pretty sure Friendly is part cat, since he likes to curl up and try to sleep on top of one of my throw cushions...

... We're thrilled to see these two sharing the couch.  I sent this picture to Corey one day with the subject: "It looks like we've officially lost our couch."

And finally, this is the greyhound equivalent of a bro-hug!  Imagine Barkley saying this in the "Most Interesting Man in the World" voice: I don't always hug other dogs... But when I do, I rest my chin gently on their back.

The only drawback to having an extra dog around is that they really are tricky and can get into mischief together.  For instance, Friendly likes to build a "nest" by removing all the cardboard from the recycling and lining his bed with it.

They are also twice as persistent in begging for food.  Corey left for work early today and sent me the following text:

"The boys HAVE been fed.  Don't believe them.  They are trying to trick you."

We hope you enjoyed the pictures!

Release the Hounds! (Pics of Our New Foster Dog)

What's better than one greyhound?  Obviously, the answer is two greyhounds!  As I hinted at earlier this month, Corey and I have become a foster family for greyhounds who need a temporary home, straight from the racetrack.  This is something we have both wanted to do for a long time and we're thrilled to finally be able to help transition these gentle dogs while they wait for their forever homes.

We began our volunteer foster application process before we moved and we are excited to share that our first foster dog (we will have each foster for a couple of weeks) arrived on Sunday!  While there is plenty of not-so-glamorous work (vet visits, training, stool samples, etc.) that goes along with fostering, we're excited to share some of the fun (yay, new doggie!) moments over the past week:

Meet our foster dog, Louciano.  We call him "Looch" for short and he is a handsome (and large) boy with that right ear, which is often folded forward.  He is curious and affectionate but also a little "pushy" and "puppyish", so Barkley has spent the past few days bossing "Looch" around and reminding him who's the alpha!  Seriously, we have never seen Barkley as a bully (especially with a dog so much larger than he is) but he seems determined to put Looch in his place!

Here's handsome Louciano in the backyard.  Note: they both wear muzzles outside because greyhounds get competitive and snappy when they run together.  They are a gentle breed the rest of the time.

Barkley can't stand Looch getting all the attention so he starts showing off.

Everything is fine until Louciano gets a little too playful with Barkley...

Imagine growls to accompany these pictures.

Finally, Looch backs down and balance is restored.

It's too hot to argue anyway.

Barkley seems to enjoy the fact that Looch has a crate while he's allowed on the furniture like a king.

Barkley finally allowed Louciano to sleep next to him on Monday.

Bark even let him play with his favourite toy!

Here are the boys going for a walk.  Note the size difference!

And few posts are complete without some small addition to our home decor.  We needed a place to store all the dog toys so I picked up a basket at Value Village for $3.99 and spray painted it aqua.

It was difficult to get a picture of it because Looch kept reaching for toys...

We hope you enjoyed meeting our newest addition!  We have him for another week and then we'll probably get another foster dog.

Until then, we enjoy saying our new favourite phrase when we let them out in the yard:
