Craigslist Moving Challenge: Part 1

As you know, we are moving this month.  While our bright, open condo cried out for some funky furniture, I am excited to experiment with new decor in our new space.   No, I'm not referring to the boxes which have taken over our living room and dining room.  Those are just a necessary annoyance as we pack to move into our new home.

Before we began packing, here is a photograph of our space, taken by my talented real estate photographer and personal friend, Thea Menagh.

While we are moving to a larger space, I think our decor will evolve and we will probably become more concerned with practical furniture as our family grows.  While style will always be a focus for us, we will also begin to look for furniture which is less fragile and more family oriented.

We have hired Door 2 Door Movers, who charge by the hour.  This means that the more effort we devote to packing properly, the cheaper our move will be.  They offered us many moving tips and we have already been using a scale to ensure that each box weighs between 20 and 25 lbs.  We would also like to minimize our moving expenses by not moving any items which we plan not to use in our new home.

I thought it would be fun to sell some of our furniture on Craigslist and apply the money directly towards our moving expenses.  Some of our more expensive pieces will either accompany us to our new home or end up at the auction house but there are many other items which I intend to sell.

Over the next month, I'll keep a record of our sale total and we'll see if we can come close to paying for our move just by selling unwanted furniture.

So far, we're off to a good start and we'll update you closer to our moving date as more items are sold:

FOR SALE:
Coffee Table
Foot Stool
Flokati Rug
Big Red Painting
Triple Convex Mirror
Teak Nesting Tables
Outdoor Bistro Set
Small BBQ
Pink Umbra Chair
Black End Table

SOLD:
Coffee Table
Big Red Painting
Triple Convex Mirror

TOTAL PROFIT:
$230

We look at a move as a new beginning and a chance to try a fresh style.  Since most of our furniture was purchased on Craigslist, it seemed appropriate to send it back out into the world.  Not only are we recycling, we are helping to pay for our move.  While I will miss some of the items, it is rewarding to keep track of our profit.  Why not try this for your next move?
